Observed on the 15th day of Kartik as per the Hindu Lunar calendar, this year, people will celebrate Deepavali on Monday, October 24. In North India, Diwali is a five-day-long celebration that begins with Dhanteras, the 13th Lunar Day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Kartik and ends with the celebration of Bhai Dooj, which falls on the 17th Lunar Day of the Krishna Paksha.
History Of Diwali
Diwali resembles everything good and better, and that’s how this festival has been the centre of many mythological stories of different religions.
According to one of the main stories in Hindu mythology, Diwali is the day when Lord Rama, his wife Sita Devi and his brother Lakshman return to their homeland after defeating Lanka’s king Ravan. In celebration of his return and victory, people lit the path and celebrated it with eager happiness.
According to another story in Hindu mythology, Diwali marks the day when Lord Krishna defeated Narakasura and freed the people of his kingdom from evil. When Lord Krishna slayed the demon, he declared it a day of festivities and merriment.
Also, according to other stories, people celebrate Goddess Lakshmi on this day. As per beliefs, Goddess Lakshmi brings prosperity, wealth and fertility.
In other cultures in India, Diwali coincides with harvest and new year celebrations. It does not matter on the basis of which story you celebrate Deepavali festivities. Nonetheless, it has the same purpose of honouring good over evil.
