Every Parent wants their child to acquire great skills so that they can do incredibly well in all spheres of life. Be it academic or platform for choosing extra curriculum activities parents try to give best to their kids. We live in a social world and having skills that help children to make their presence felt is important. Children need to grow up confident and having basic skills of the day to day life is a boon.
When we talk about basic skills- Public Speaking & Communication Skills are two of them. These skills can be acquired in childhood itself with Proper guidance and perseverance. No matter whatsoever streams a student takes when he/she grows up, speaking fluently and carrying themselves with grace is always a plus. Learning starts at home and a parent can do it right away at any moment.
1. Listen & Talk To Your Child
Proper interactions are always a good sign of communication. Talking to your children, listening to them, knowing their idea or even their Crazy stuff should be always listened carefully. This will help you to correct them, maybe just their vocab or any new word. Ask them about it the next day, repeat it till they learn. Learning new words makes kids feel good on their own. They repeat it to show it off.
Being a mother, I do it, and while having a conversation with my daughter most of the time I correct her words –Correction does not mean the word is wrong -It maybe they might be mixing two languages. She often mixes Urdu with Kashmiri or at times English with Urdu and sometimes she makes new words out of the fun!
2. Make Their Videos
I do it most of the time with my girl – when she is singing rhymes of her own -Rehearsing it as she is on the stage. It makes her do it well and also gives her the confidence to focus on it to get the desired video out of it. Practice and encouragement are very necessary to make children confident for Public Speaking.
3. Ask General Questions Each Day
Asking questions about routine things is great. Firstly, it helps you to know about their activities, secondly, it gives them a chance to express themselves. Instead of asking my kid are you back from playing?
I ask her questions where She has to give more elaborate answers like – What you played today and did you learned it? were their new friend who joined? etc
4. Impart Confidence
Make sure whenever your kid is speaking or Just reading it out, you politely correct them if they are trying new words or language. Don’t make fun of anything nor behave like a loudspeaker by telling other family members (For Fun Purpose) about it. It makes them feel low and impacts their confidence in a negative way. Always be a source of encouragement to your kid which makes them a good speaker by gaining Confidence for Public Speaking.
5. Good Use Of Speaking Over Phone
Children love talking on the phone and you can make good use of this opportunity. Children talk on a daily basis to their grandparents, Immediate cousins, and many favorite people of the family – Make sure they communicate well, speak Properly and you can also teach them by side What to ask, Gestures or Just being Well behaved.
My girl Is 4 years and She makes sure that each time she calls her grandparents, she asks them about health and other XYZ thing. She gets a sense of happiness and feels like a being Big Girl. Speaking to them and asking things confidently broadens her smile.
6. Encourage Independent Talks
Encourage them to speak if someone asks questions, even if it’s just the introduction or anywhere in a public place. I remember last year We were out for family dinner and a waiter was standing to take an order, my daughter holding the menu suddenly said – Uncle, One Biryani & a Lemon Juice. To now, most of the time she recalls saying this with herself and says I ordered one day of my own. I have seen the level of pride whenever she says it with a broad smile & twinkling little eyes.
7. Encourage Reading Books
Books are truly the best friends of Humans. A great way to increase communication and public speaking skills in children is to read books with them. Reading is a great tool for speech and enhancing speaking skills to a great extent.
